About Me
I started my career in education as a teacher, before moving into pastoral leadership as a Head of Year, where I supported an entire year group through their school journey.
I’ve worked across a range of schools — inner London, outer London, mixed schools, boys’ schools, and all-girls settings — gaining a deep understanding of the diverse needs within education.
Following this, I stepped into one of the most challenging roles in schools: becoming a SENDCO, and later an Assistant Headteacher overseeing SEND.
🎯 The Reality of SENDSEND is one of the most complex and demanding areas in education and it is only becoming more so.
-Needs are increasing.
-Referrals are rising.
-Expectations are growing.
And yet, the funding and systems to support SENDCOs have not kept pace.
This isn’t about schools — the schools I’ve worked in have been incredible.
This is about a system that places an enormous responsibility on SENDCOs, often without the structure or support needed to manage it effectively.
The role of the SENDCO is not to “fix everything.”
It is to coordinate — to bring together the right support, at the right time, for each child.
I often think of it like building a house.
When a child starts school, they need scaffolding support systems, strategies, interventions all carefully put in place.
Over time, that scaffolding should gradually come away, leaving a structure that can stand independently.
That is the goal: independence, confidence, and success.
But the challenge is this — you’re not doing this for one child.
You’re doing it for hundreds.
SENDCOs are not just coordinators.
They are:
- The support system for teachers
- The reassurance for parents
- The advocate for vulnerable students
- The link between leadership, safeguarding, and pastoral teams
In many ways, they become the emotional and operational centre of the school.
And with increasing expectations — and now even AI shaping parent awareness and complaints — the pressure is higher than ever.
The result?
Burnout.
Overwhelm.
Working evenings, weekends, holidays — just to try and keep up.
There came a point where I realised something had to change.
No matter how hard you work, there simply isn’t enough time in the day to do everything to the level you want to — and that’s not a reflection of you, it’s a reflection of the system.
SENDCOs deserve:
- Support
- Structure
- Time
- Balance
You should be able to love your job and have a life outside of it.
